We are excited to see UAMS achieve Baby-Friendly Hospital designation! You can read more about the great news here.

Being designated a Baby-Friendly Hospital means that the hospital adheres to the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding–all of which foster environments and support systems that make it easier for moms to start and continue breastfeeding.

But what does breastfeeding have to do with increasing the number of Arkansans who are at a healthy weight? Research continues to show that breastfeeding plays an important role in reducing obesity risk from childhood through adulthood. Breastfeeding has also been shown to reduce the risk of other chronic diseases including asthma, type 2 diabetes, ear and respiratory infections and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) in infants and children.
