Gov. Asa Hutchinson joined Healthy Active Arkansas at Prairie Grove Elementary School Sept. 27 for the dedication of a new water bottle filling station. The Rethink Your Drink: Choose Water! grant program encourages students, teachers and staff to drink water instead of sugary drinks during the school day. A healthy dose of water each day helps support oral health and a healthy weight.
Gov. Hutchinson spoke to a cafeteria full of fourth graders about proper hydration and the importance of exercise. The governor told a story about how he and his brother hiked 37 miles from Springdale (Washington County) to Gravette (Benton County) when they were young. For that trip, they carried their water in a canteen.
Other speakers at the dedication included Baptist Health CEO Troy Wells, president and chairman of the Healthy Active Arkansas board, and Renee Mallory, deputy director for public health programs with the Arkansas Department of Health. Kendrick Fincher Hydration for Life provided reusable water bottles for the students. The American Heart Association in Northwest Arkansas is also a partner, taking up healthy weight as its mission priority in the region.
